There has been a steady rebuilding of the economy, but growth rates remain about half of what they were during most of the 1990's. Expect a growth 6% from our present forecast for end 2003. IMF loan paid off and FX reserves at US$40 billion. One advantage of the slowdown is that Thailand has been able to make much needed improvements to its infrastructure. The U.S. is Thailand's largest trading partner and there are a wide variety of U.S. companies in Thailand. Thai politics is interesting and since the early 1990's has been stable. Current government expected to control the government for 10-20 years. Government officials play an important part of business and it not unusual for government officials to provide introductions to key persons in various industries. As in most Asian markets you will need a local partner or agent to work with you in developing your business relationships. English is spoken in business meetings, but it would be advisable to have an interpreter on your team during negotiations to ensure mutual understanding of details. The pace of business is generally time consuming, with a great deal of time taken up at the beginning in building relationships. The Thai's are a relaxed people and will go to great lengths to avoid hurting or offending others feelings or cause embarrassment. Thailand is a safe environment for foreigners, although common sense should be used when walking late at night. My fees are based upon an hourly rate of $150 per hour or $1200 per day. Where travel is required actual expenses for air fare (business class outside of US), hotel expenses, car rental, daily per diem of $80 (taxi, airport fees, personal meals) and direct project expenses, are charged to you and are to be pre-paid. When travel outside Asia is needed a minimum of 4 days is required. Travel in the U.S. requires a minimum of one week. Fees for larger projects can be negotiated.
